I'm Running To Your Arms

Our school sponsored a 5k run this past Sunday. This was such an awesome run and I had a personal record 25:00.7 :) Here is a picture that was taken from the race. My friend Janelle has more pictures, so once I get those I will post them as well. I also love the lyrics listed below. I repeat the lyrics in my head when the run starts to get tough.

Forever Reign by Hillsong United

You are good, You are good
When there's nothing good in me
You are love, You are love
On display for all to see
You are light, You are light
When the darkness closes in
You are hope, You are hope
You have covered all my sin

You are peace, You are peace
When my fear is crippling
You are true, You are true
Even in my wandering
You are joy, You are joy
You're the reason that I sing
You are life, You are life,
In You death has lost it's sting

Oh, I’m running to your arms,
I’m running to arms
The riches of your love
Will always be enough
Nothing compares to Your embrace
Light of the world forever reign

You are more, You are more
Than my words will ever say
You are Lord, You are Lord
All creation will proclaim
You are here, You are here
In your presence I'm made whole
You are God, You are God
Of all else I'm letting go

Oh, I’m running to your arms
I’m running to arms
The riches of your love
Will always be enough
Nothing compares to Your embrace
Light of the world forever reign

//My heart will sing
no other name
Jesus, Jesus//

//Oh, I’m running to your arms
I’m running to arms
The riches of your love
Will always be enough
Nothing compares to Your embrace
Light of the world forever reign//

5 To Go

So this summer Eric and I decided to start eating healthy and working out. I would have to say this is the longest I have ever stuck to a diet or exercise plan. We were doing this more for the health benefits. My family has some serious heart disease, and I want to take all preventive measures. I wasn't miserable with the way I looked but I wasn't thrilled either.

I am happy to say that I am 15 pounds lighter since we started. I'm still not exactly where I want to be, but I just look at myself and can't imagine having another 15 lbs on me. I'm super pleased with my success. I have 5 more to go to get to college weight. Even though I'm 5 pounds from pre-med school weight, I know I have added more muscle. Running has really toned my legs up. I love it!

This is from Christmas 2010

May 2011 before diet & exercise.

Labor Day Weekend 2011 prior to diet and exercise.
A fun evening at the Plaza with some great friends. Sorry it's kind of blurry. This was probably about a month ago.

Running Update

You may recall that I started running back in July. Well I guess I should update you on how that's going.

I am still running at least 3 times a week since running camp. I have my first official race this Saturday in Independence, MO. The Joshua Center, the non-profit I volunteer at, is having a fundraiser race. I'm so excited for this to be my first official race. What better way than to run for the kids.

Back in July at the running camp, my 5k time was 33:36. My original goal was to get that under 30 minutes for the run on October 1st. Well as I continued running, I soon realized that was too easy of a goal. I decided ok lets shoot for 25 minutes. Well I hadn't come close to that. Two weeks ago I ran it in 27:10 and felt a feeling of defeat. I thought there is no way I can get under 25 in just 2 weeks. I then changed my goal to be under 27 minutes. I thought that was still really good considering that's 6 minutes faster than what I started.

Well today when I set out for my run, I thought ok I'm going to run 3.1 and run it HARD. I just wanted to see what I could do. I had my phone set to tell me my progress every .5 miles, so that way I could tell how I was doing. At the first .5 mile, I was at 3:45. I thought there's no way I'm running faster than an 8 minute pace. Sure enough, I finished the first mile in 7:49. I was super excited! I slowed my 2nd mile down a little bit. I ended up running 5K in 25:27. Not too bad! I was very pleased. I'm not going to lie, the run kicked my butt. I'm super excited for the actual run on Saturday. I will for sure have Eric take a picture before, during, and after. I'll let you know how it goes.

Found a New Hobby

This past week I was in Joplin, MO working a running camp. I went as part of my sports medicine rotation. The camp had about 200 kids at all levels 7th-12th grade. I learned so much while I was there as far as evaluating injuries, deciding if an x-ray is needed, and how to treat certain injuries. I just loved it! I also chose to run with the kids during the workouts. I figured, I'm there why not get a good work out in too.

I have never been much of a runner, so I wasn't sure how this would go. Eric and I have been doing P90X since June, and I have lost 10 lbs so far. I think maybe 4 times since June I have gone running with him. We would run a mile and that would be it. I just couldn't push myself to run any further.

I started my fellowship July 1, and one of the fellows is a runner. Janelle ran in highschool and college. She even runs local races around KC. I thought hey maybe she will be my motivation to give running a try. We ran on the treadmill twice prior to camp. She had me jog 5 minutes, walk 1 minute, jog 5, walk 1, etc. The first time it was a total of 15 minutes jogging. The second time I jogged a total of 20 minutes. This was the longest I've ever run. I was so excited.

Well at Running Camp, we got up at 5:30 to run before it got too hot. The first day we were told to run 25 minutes. I ran with the slowest group and ended up running 2.5 miles. That's the longest ever! The next morning we only ran for 20 minutes, and I ran 2.17 miles. Still proud of my success. The third morning we ran for 30 minutes, which ended up being 2.75 miles for me. WOOHOO!!! I was getting so excited about running and proud of myself for doing it.

Well on Friday morning we had the end of camp 5K. I had never ran a 5K, but my goal was to do it. I was in the very back of the group but I completed it without walking. That's all that mattered. I completed the 5K in 33:36 WOOHOO!!! There was this HUGE hill after the first mile. The hill slowed me down to a 16 minute pace. It was such a hard hill to run for my first 5K. I was shooting for a 30 minute 5K, but the hill slowed me down a ton. Oh well! I'm still proud that I did it. I plan on continuing the running along with our P90X workout. I'll keep you posted on how things go.

All sweaty after finishing my first 5K. Thanks Janelle for pushing me and believing in me :)

P90X

My goal is to look like her. Want to know my secret? P90X!!!!

I lost roughly 12 lbs for the wedding. Well now that we've been married for 7 1/2 months, I have gained back all 12 lbs plus some. Thanks sweetie!!! I weighed myself last Wed at the doctor's office and then again this past Monday. I had lost 1 lb!!!! I know it's not much but you gotta start some where.

We even took before pictures, but I won't be posting those until the end. I will post my before and after pictures to show you my results.

Last week Eric and I started P90X workouts. Then this Monday we decided to go ahead and add on the nutrition plan which is intense. The entire program is 90 days long. It's broken up into 30 day increments. After 30 days the workouts change so does the nutrition plan.

Here is what was on the menu for me today.
(Eric's menu looked the same except for his portions were larger)

Breakfast:
6 egg white omelet with 1 oz fat free mozzarella cheese
2 pieces of turkey bacon
8 oz skim milk

Morning Snack:
protein snack bar (I like special k chocolate peanut butter)

Lunch:
6 oz of shrimp stir fry which had shrimp, onion, garlic, ginger, water chestnuts, and broccoli
1 tbsp sesame seeds
1 oz cashews

Afternoon Snack:
1 fat free string cheese

Dinner:
6 oz chicken breast with pesto
1/2 cup zucchini
1 cup brown rice

So if you're a friend of mine here in KC, next time you see me just humor me. Make some comment about wow looks like you've lost weight please. Even if it's not true just say it to make me feel better haha. I always start workout programs with good intentions, but when I don't see results I give up.
